These feelings can be particularly prevalent when you enter the 'shock' phase of the adaptation process. Sometimes they come more often than usual, often unexpectedly triggered.⁠
⁠
Remember though that there's no set timeline for this ☝️- different people may experience these phases in a different order and of varying length. It's also possible that we jump between phases every now and then depending on the context. ⁠
⁠
Although these emotions are not the most comfortable ones usually, I encourage you to look at the information they provide - all emotions are providers of information!

What needs are unmet for you when you feel these? Did some boundaries get crossed? What are you missing? ⁠🧐
⁠
You can then use this insight to create the environment for yourself where you can get these needs met at least to some extent, and likely in ways different from the default you've been going for before. ⁠

If you’re further down the line - how was your experience?

For me in the honeymoon phases the most important and valuable thing was to journal, meaning document the nice things I saw, what I like, what I feel excited about in the new place. This helped me immensely when the shock inevitably hit me, providing me with a) some nice memories to hold on to and b) a reminder of all the reasons I’ve made the move for in the first place 💪💪💪

In many cultures “Hey, how are you” is just a substitute for “Hello”.
Socially expected answer is along the lines of “Great, thanks, you?” Or “Hanging in there, you?”

How many times have you found yourself responding with “Great, thanks” while actually you had a hell of a day?

How many of these, you actually had this conversation with a close colleague or a friend where you could have had the chance to speak openly and get the support you may have needed?

As leaders and colleagues, we may need to go beyond the popular “How are you” to really gauge how our teams are doing and create space for building that trust.

Here are some alternative questions you can start your catch ups with that will give the space for an open conversation:
👉How did you spend your day so far?
👉What’s on top of mind for you at the moment?
👉What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this week?

This will help you open up the space for your colleagues, get to know them, and help them adapt quicker!
