As you might have figured out if you’ve been following me for a while, the responses may differ depending on the cultural background. Most individuals will likely not simply be one or the other ‘type’. Rather, everyone would have a certain preference, which falls somewhere in between the two ends of the spectrum we are discussing. And those are - Particularist-Universalist dimension of cultural values (as per Cultural Intelligence Center research). ⁠
⁠
👉️Universalism versus Particularism is the extent to which you prefer to apply the same standards to everyone versus making exceptions.⁠
⁠
⁠
When working with universalists, you may expect to have many rules, policies and procedures in place to ensure everyone is treated the same and it is clear which rules apply in what situation. Examples of countries where the universalist approach is more common are: US, UK, Austria, Germany, Denmark.⁠
⁠
In particularist cultures however, it is ok to make exceptions to some individuals, especially if they are friends or family, more flexibility around the rules is common. Examples of regions where this approach is very common include: Latin America, Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa.⁠
⁠
Remember, as usual, you need to pair these cultural trends with individual preferences and characters, but either way it’s two attitudes that is helpful to be aware of when working in international teams. Especially if that team is making decisions that apply to the whole global organisation😉⁠

First time working with a new culture can be a series of faux pas, but also a steep learning curve that will help you on your international career journey.⁠

There will inevitably be times where you (metaphorically) shake hands when they bow. You can’t prepare for or predict all of these situations!⁠
⁠
BUT - - you can invest in developing your cultural intelligence (CQ) to minimise the impact of such failures. How? By working on developing the four competences that CQ consists of: ⁠
💪DRIVE is your motivation and level of curiosity for multicultural interactions.⁠
⁠
💪KNOWLEDGE is your understanding how various cultures may be similar or different, on many levels – business culture, leadership, laws, linguistics.⁠
⁠
💪STRATEGY is the awareness of your own cultural preferences and how they impact your interactions with others, as well as the ability to plan for multicultural interactions and check whether your understanding was correct or not.⁠
⁠
💪ACTION is your ability to adapt (and not adapt) when working in multicultural contexts.⁠
⁠
Starting one step at a time to develop these can really transform the way you react and manage challenging intercultural scenarios! ⁠

A more natural way for me to communicate is justify first, and then arrive at a conclusion/ask. A Principles-first approach. ⁠

During my time at McKinsey, I experienced a ⁠very “American” company culture. The expected communication style, and the way we were trained to communicate internally and with clients was the applications-first, top-down style.🔺 Meaning, you give your ask/conclusion at the beginning, and the underlying arguments below, if at all. ⁠
⁠
It’s REALLY hard when you were trained completely differently and told that you need to make your points first to justify that your conclusion is ‘worthy’ - why else would someone treat you seriously if you just present the conclusion itself first? 😜⁠
⁠
Because of this, I struggled to structure emails or slides or presentations that way straight away and it took me waay longer to create each little comms-related thing. ⁠DESPITE OF ‘technically’ knowing what I needed to do, it still felt like an uphill battle.
⁠
☝️Well, here comes the secret! ⁠
⁠
Instead of forcing myself to flip my thinking as I was creating the content, I leveraged the existing strengths. I figured out that to speed up my process I can write it all up as it was in my mind - from arguments to conclusion, from reasons to the main ask - and then... just flip the order of my email and tweak a bit!

My effectiveness honestly sped up a lot as I was no longer wasting the time to structure the message ‘the right way’ straight away while wasting a lot of my mental energy. ⁠
I appreciated that my messages were good in terms of content, but the thing that needed to change to increase the influencing power of my messages was the order.⁠ Small tweaks like this matter.

The key to avoid this particular trap, and “keeping your hand” is knowing and keeping your boundaries.

They can look very differently for each of us, but here are some examples:

🗓️“I won’t be able to make that call I’m afraid, I don’t work after 6pm - I can be available any time between X and Y. Alternatively, I’m open to doing this bit of work a-sync to accommodate all our schedules.”

🥗”I’m going to take a bit of me-time during lunch time today, but shall we catch up later for a coffee?”

📞“I’d rather not discuss this situation without her present here. Maybe we could all connect together to establish what happened?”

You’re not alone! Many people experience this type of ‘writer’s block’. More often than not though the reasons are very personal and not related to the ability of writing at all! 🤦⁠
⁠
Here are a few reasons that often keep people stuck: ⁠
😬How do I choose the experiences or achievements to share here? ⁠
😬What format do I choose? ⁠
😬Should I include information about X? ⁠
😬I start writing but then just get scattered and distracted! ⁠
⁠
While these are good questions to help shape your content, what’s likely going through your head too if you get stuck here is ⁠
😬’What if I’m not successful in this recruiting process?’, or ⁠
😬’What if I choose the wrong experiences to include there?’. ⁠
⁠
That’s what keeps you procrastinating. ⁠
⁠
In reality, it’s rarely the sole fault of the choice of bullet point or heading colour or whether you add your location or not that makes your application unsuccessful. ⁠
⁠
Depending on your industry, job search may be a longer process that requires commitment and flexibility in adjusting your application documents to the needs of the company. It also highly depends on your motivations and your ability to present yourself and your achievements in an interview. And the factor of simply a good connection with the interviewer or a future manager and alignment to company’s values and goals still play a part too. ⁠

It’s a tough one, but unfortunately more common that we may think. It may not even be a “bad manager” type thing, it can simply be the dynamics of the company or an agile style of working of the leadership team too.

There are a few things that come to my mind that I would explore here.

🤔 I would ask myself if “why is it frustrating or tough for me?”
The reason I’d ask myself this question is because this may help determine whether it’s a working style preferences clash or actually a poor management situation.
For example, if you’re the type of person that likes clarity and planning forward (that’s sooo me, by the way🤪), then the reason the situation is frustrating to you could be because your manager prefers the more iterative, flexible and agile approach to work. If that’s the case, you could work on expanding YOUR repertoire of working styles so that you can flex more easily (more on that in other posts!).

Alternatively you could address this with your manager directly too to find a comfortable middle ground.

How? For example using the Observations - Feelings/consequences - Needs - Request framework deriving from the non-violent communication approach.

This could look as follows:
I noticed that in the past few weeks we have been going back and forth on our ideas for this slide, and actually returning to the initial versions too (Observation).
This makes me feel irritated because I feel like it stops me from completing this task, and like I’m not doing a good enough job. It also means I spend a lot of extra time on this task and getting behind on other priorities (Feelings/Consequences).
I would need more clarity on the expected outcome or at least for the reasons for the frequent change of mind, to help me manage this task (Need).
Would you be able to provide me with more context on why we change the approach so often, or discuss the requirements once again to re-align on them? (Request).
