Cultural reads #5

Cultural reads_ProjectAbroad.Eu

Some further reads on culture, intercultural business and expat life today 🙂

The first article is an introduction to some further studies that have been made around how cultures and their values still have a great influence on individuals even in this globalised world. How we use colours, how we think about a society and values is still influenced by the environment we live in!

By accident while looking through various articles on HBR, I found the article about global joint ventures from May 1982 issue of the paper. It’s interesting to see that back then already people were noticing the challenges that companies are facing while expanding and working globally. It seems though that there was not enough research on this type of cooperation that could help managers deal with those challenges. I’m glad to see that the intercultural communication knowledge has expanded and that more and more people are actually acknowledging its importance in employers’ and companies’ performance.

And lastly something rather entertaining – a quick run through experiments that have been meant to research whether some countries are more likely to cheat than others. The results say that not necessarily as the differences that they spotted were not statistically significant.

From what I’ve been hearing  though I’m not so sure that these experiments would be applicable to an academic or school situation for example. I still do think that there is probably more connivance for cheating on tests at school in Poland, than it is for example here in the UK. There is also much more at stake in such a situation compared to winning a chocolate in the experiments mentioned in the article. I would be interested to see a study examining the academic differences in cheating, would you?

Let me know if these articles are of interest for you or if there is anything else you’d like to read more about – I do dig through the internet to look for some interesting content anyway so I might as well try and find something for you!
